It’s that time of year when people are beginning to decorate for the holidays. It can be easy to get distracted with the hustle and bustle of the season that we forget how hazardous some of our decorations can be if we do not take the proper precautions.

Planning ahead and following these simple tips can ensure your Christmas décor is merry and bright as well as safe for your family and home.

Tip #1: Carefully examine every strand of lights – Check to make sure there are no exposed, cracked or frayed cords as well as ensure there are no sockets without bulbs.

Tip #2: Replace old or damaged strands of lights – Typically, strands of lights have a life of 5 years if properly cared for and stored. It may seem more cost effective to repair damaged lights with electrical tape rather that purchase a new strand but it is a small price to have a safer and reliable strand of lights.

Tip #3: Consider Switching to LED lights – While they are more expensive, LED lights are much safer for both indoor and outdoor lighting. Not only are LED lights cool to the touch but they will have less impact on your electric bill which during the holiday every little bit helps.

Tip #4: Use the rule of three – Most manufacturers suggest not plugging in more than three strands of lights into a single extension cord or outlet to avoid overheating. However, this sequence depends on the wattage of your home. If you are not sure what the wattage is you can use a power strip with a built-in circuit breaker instead of your wall outlet for added protection.

Tip #5: Be cautious when using extension cords – Regardless if you have followed the first 4 tips outdoor lights can still pose a safety risk if your extension cords are not properly placed. Make sure your extension cords are not low enough to be subject to rain, pools, and melting snow.

Tip #6: Use appropriate ladder safety – Falls are one of the highest emergency room related injuries during the holidays. It is important to know how to safely use a ladder when hanging Christmas lights. Having a spotter with you at all times to hold the ladder is much important especially on the various surfaces around your house.

Tip #7 – Use outdoor and indoor lights accordingly – Christmas are typically labeled by their approved use. Make sure your read the labels carefully to ensure you are using the right strands outdoors. Indoor lights are not sealed and insulated for moisture and if exposed to the elements could pose a risk.

Tip #8 – Keep your tree hydrated – It is a growing trend to forego to the artificial tree and pick the perfect real tree this year. Sadly Christmas tree fires are one of the leading causes of fires during the holidays. If you opt for the real tree makes sure it is fresh when you buy it and keep it watered daily. Once the tree dries out it is no longer safe to keep in your home.

Whether you go all out with your Christmas decorations or keep it simple this season, protecting your family and home should be at the top of your list. Here’s to a happy and safe holiday season!
